The Rolleiflex Automat MX-EVS, produced by German company Franke & Heidecke, is a testament to the pinnacle of twin lens reflex (TLR) camera design. From its conception in 1927, the Rolleiflex camera has set the standard for TLRs, becoming the go-to tool for professional photographers and a prized possession for advanced amateurs.
As part of the Automat system, the Rolleiflex Automat MX-EVS was constructed with a unique film loading system which allowed for rapid film changing, a feature highly appreciated by photographers on the go. Another significant feature of the Automat MX-EVS is the system that locks the aperture and shutter speed together via an EV (Exposure Value) scale. Once a combination is calculated, photographers can access other appropriate combinations by simply adjusting either the aperture or shutter speed dial while maintaining the same exposure. This model also introduced a switch to override the film advance when re-cocking the shutter, facilitating intentional double-exposures, a feature integrated into all subsequent Rolleiflexes. As with many Rolleiflex Automat cameras, the MX-EVS can be found with either Carl Zeiss Tessar or Schneider-Kreuznach Xenar taking lenses - both versions being 75mm f3.5. The viewing lens on the Automat MX-EVS is a Heidosmat 75mm f2.8 triplet design.
Built with superb design, engineering, and craftsmanship, the Rolleiflex Automat MX-EVS is not just a camera, but an experience. It holds a unique place in the history of photography and is expected to remain popular for many more decades.
